Hailing from Bournemouth, where the writer Mary Shelley is buried, the story of Frankenstein has always fascinated me. In particular, thoughts surrounding the past lives and stories that the monster’s body comprises - the living amalgamation of so many lifetimes. Imagine if those stories merged into one narrative. What if his memories were a hybrid of theirs. What would be his happiest memory, or his saddest?
This series of somewhat eery composite faces and hands present an almost non-human appearance. I like to imagine that if Frankenstein’s monster caught a glimpse of himself in the mirror in his memories, this is what he would see looking back at him.
In homage to Shelley, all models in this series are from and/or currently living in Bournemouth and the surrounding area. Although their geography might be similar, their stories are broad, and these hybrid tales that make up the compositions’ backdrops are sure to be an eclectic read, as they come bursting through the foreground.
